Joe Bradley is a reporter for the American News Service in Rome, a job he doesn’t like much as he prefers working for what he considers a real news agency in the United States. He’s about to be fired when he misses, sleeps and signs his boss Hennessy lie for an interview with Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, who is on a goodwill tour of Europe, Rome being her only last stop. However, he thinks he may have found a huge scoop. Princess Anne officially canceled all her engagements in Rome due to illness. In fact, he recognizes her image as a good young woman but simply drunk and rescued from the street last night (because he didn’t want to turn her in to the police for being a tramp), and who is still in his small studio apartment sleeping off her hangover.
What Joe doesn’t know is that she’s really sleeping from the effects of the painkillers her doctor gave her to calm her down after a bout of anxiety, and that anxiety because she hates her strict life where she doesn’t have the freedom and she always has to. And they say the politically correct things, not what’s on her mind or heart. In her desire for a little freedom, she took a chance to escape from the royal palace in which she was staying, though she had no money in her pockets. Joe thinks he can have an exclusive interview with her without even knowing that he’s a reporter or that he’s interviewing her.
As she accompanies Joe “Anya Smith” – her name as she tells him in an attempt to conceal her true identity – around Rome on Freedom Day in disguise, she is somewhat unaware that Secret Intelligence is looking for her, along with flight photographer Joe’s girlfriend, Irving Radovich, who is tasked by Joe By secretly taking pictures of her, those pictures to accompany the story. As the day progressed, Jo and Ann slowly began to fall in love with each other. Their feelings for each other influence what they both decide to do, Anne regarding her royal duties, Joe regarding the story, and both regarding whether there is a future for them together.
